Welcome to the PostDoc Place
- We are a group of postdoctoral fellows from the Psychology Department (but welcoming others from other units, e.g. Neuroscience, Speech Language and Hearing, Psychology, Philosophy, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology). Our goal is to provide support and allow for the sharing of professional development information among postdocs. We meet once or twice a month. How are they different from other types of faculty searches? What are some of the criteria used to select applicants? What are the expectation of new recruits in the first few years? Dr. Ferrante has been a Program Officer at the National Institute of Mental Health for several decades, and has now transitioned to the Food and Drug Administration. - Thursday, Dec 2nd, 2021, 10am, Zoom Q&A: Non-academic careers for postdocs: Dr. Hellen Whithaker will joing us from England and tell us about jobs in the Scientic Publishing world.
Helen is a Publisher of Medicine and Life Science journals at Springer Nature. She obtained her PhD in molecular ecology from the University of Glasgow, UK. Her post-doctoral studies in aquaculture genetics took her from Scotland to South Africa. She joined the pioneering open access publisher, BioMed Central, in 2008 as a Scientific Editor for the BMC series. She remained with this company that has since merged with Springer and subsequently Nature Publishing Group. Helen currently manages a portfolio of biotechnology and biomedical engineering journals, and has wider responsibility for content acquisition in Medicine and Life Sciences.

- Wed Oct 10th, 2018, 4:15pm: Prof. Lee Ryan will share her thoughts and answer your questions on 'Project Management'. How do you know you have a project worthy of doing'? How do you know when to 'stop' a project? How do you know you have enough for a publication? For a conference? How many (different) projects should you be working on? How do you match a project to a student?

- Tu Feb 9th 2016, 4:00pm (Psych 317B): Practice interviews for a first faculty position - Part II. Try and prepare 'talking points' on research, teaching and service (3-5 bullet points each, that you can deliver in < 1 min/bullet point, making them sounds like a coherent whole).

Board of Regents? Where does the money come from? What are the different administrative branches and what to they do? Differences between private and public universities? How should young faculty best use the different university entities etc...
